Allah is the Light of the Heavens and the Earth

Life is light-dependant. Without the blessed rays of the sun, life on earth would cease. We need it for warmth, to see our direction, for the food that we subsist on. If this is our dependence then on the light of the sun, a creation of Allah, how much more dependent are we on Allah, who is Light himself?

We need Him for our spiritual sustenance. With His light, we are guided from error and deviance. With His light, we are spiritually nourished.

The Prophet’s (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) cousin, Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) says that when the Messenger of Allah (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) woke up at night for the night prayer, he would say: “O Allah, to You be praise, You are the Sustainer of heaven and earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise, You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them” (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

This decal, of this verse that is known as the “Parable of Light” from Surah Nur, is written in the Thuluth script which was the predominant script used for the Qur’an in the 13th century and is still widely used as a decorative font.
