Marital Bliss and Contentment

What really is love? The Qur’an describes marital love as one of the signs or miracles of Allah: “And among His Signs is this that He created for you mates from among yourselves that you may dwell in tranquillity with them and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts); verily in that are signs for those who reflect” (Surah Rum, 30:21).

The Arabic word “yaskun” encompasses all of the following meanings: to be or become still, to calm down, to be reassured, to rely on and have faith in, to feel at home. In youth, marriage is melded by love, in middle age by companionship and in old age by care. All of these are part of marital “sukun.” This is the safe harbour that a ship returns to the dock, the garment that covers and conceals flaws, the blanket that gives comfort and provides warmth.
