Understanding the Sacred Gift of Time: Surat al-Asr and OUR Life

Translation of calligraphy: “By time, indeed, mankind is in loss. Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” (Quran:103)

According to the Quran’s interpretive tradition, the three short verses contained in this Surah contain the entire message of the Quran, namely, that human beings are in loss unless they turn to Allah. In a broader sense, the Surah emphasizes the two virtues of clinging to the truth and being patient in a world that has been spiritually darkened in general and, at times, full of spiritual crisis for a human being in particular.
This is arguably why many of our greatest scholars have stated that this one Surah alone would be sufficient for the believers, if they contemplated its true meaning.

With this as a short background, I wanted to also take this opportunity to introduce our latest piece of artwork—a premium all-glass clock with the face beautifully calligraphed with the entire Surat al-Asr.

The intention of this clock is for it to serve as a sacred reminder for the sacred gift of time. Living in the midst of a pandemic, many of us have ‘extra’ time and so we need to be (gently) reminded that this time is a gift from Allah that needs to be, to the best of our ability, used for as much good as possible, in whatever capacity He affords us.

Our new clock includes the following features:

• A 27/49/100 cm circumference with a 4 mm thick tempered glass plate (4x stronger than normal glass!)
• A no-tick second hand that glides in a continuous (silent) sweeping motion
• A unique style of calligraphy in which twelve of the “alifs” from the Surah elegantly form the lines used for positioning the clock’s numbers
• A high-quality matt vinyl in either black, white, or an etched glass-vinyl
• A stainless-steel hanger that is attached to the clock’s mechanism
• A wooden stand for the  desktop size clock (26cm) to display it on your desk or shelf
