Light Upon light

Description

This is one of the most famous and often recited verses of the Qur’an that forms part of the Light Verse.

According to al-Tabari, this part of the verse describes the five kinds of light a believer possesses: speech, deeds, entrance (into the grave at death), exit (from the grave on the Day of Judgement), and return (to Jannah). According to others, the two lights refer to faith and action, or to the light of the Qur’an together with the light of the believer.

This particular part of the verse is often found inscribed on the lamps that hang in many masjids in the Islamic world, and the design of some masjids has been based on its symbolism.
