Gratitude—The Ultimate Station

We live in a world of constant encroachment of the mundane. The modern world slowly and surely squeezes the sacred out of our lives. Sacred values, etiquette, communication, and interaction are increasingly replaced with nihilism and alienation; vulgarity and egoism; spin and deception; and crass materialistic competition.

How do we maintain our spiritual integrity in such an atomistic and narcissistic world? The answer is: gratitude (shukr).

The quality of shukr is one of THE BEST qualities a believer can have. The hadith informs us: “He who is not grateful to people is not grateful to Allah.” (Abu Dawud and Ahmad)

And where else but in the beautiful teachings of our beloved Prophet and Messenger (May Allah bless him and give him peace) do we find this validated? After noticing the Prophet’s feet swelling due to his excessive nightly worship, his beloved wife, Aishah (May Allah be well pleased with her), commented: “Why do you do this when your past and future sins are forgiven?” To which he (May Allah bless him and give him peace) replied: “Shall I not be a grateful servant of Allah?” (Bukhari and Muslim)
