Floral Alhamdulillah

The inevitable reality of this short and temporal life of ours is death. There’s no escaping it. However, no matter how short our life is in this world, the reality is that Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala created each and every one of us for a reason. What is that reason? Allah Himself gives us the answer: “And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me” (Quran 51:56). If this is our ultimate purpose in life, then who really has time for demonic things like jealously, hatred, animosity, greed, and malice? Shouldn’t we rather focus on angelic qualities such as gratitude, generosity, love, kindness, and compassion?

As Muslims, I think we would all agree to the above. The question is, how do we engender such lofty qualities? The answer isn’t as easy as we might think. Unfortunately, we have a number of ‘enemies’ both within and without ourselves that are constantly trying to prevent us from achieving true servitude to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala: nafs (carnal desire), hawa (caprice), shaytan, and dunya. We can only overcome these four through the constant remembrance of our Creator. And what other way to begin this spiritual journey than by praising Him, subhanahu wa ta’ala? Alhamdulillah!
