“Nothing you seek relying on your Lord will ever be difficult. And nothing you seek relying on yourself will ever be easy.”
This is a translation of Ibn ‘Ata’illah al-Iskandari’s (d. 709 AH) 23rd aphorism.
As Muslims, Ibn ‘Ata’illah reminds us that if we truly and sincerely rely on Allah in any of our endeavours, we should know full well that He will be with us, no matter how difficult the task may seem. On the other hand, if we do not rely on Him, then no matter how easy something may seem, it will, in reality, never be easy.
The benefits of tawakkul are many, including the fact that, through it, you hand over to Allah whatever it is that burdens your heart and mind. With this realization, the believer acknowledges with certainty and confidence that his success “is not but through Allah. Upon him I have relied, and to Him, I return.” (Qur’an 11:88)
Through this visual reminder, let us reflect and rejoice in knowing that Allah ta?ala is always with us if we are “with” Him.
