The 9th of Dhu’l Hijjah is considered one of the most significant days of a believer. The pilgrims gather at ‘Arafah in one of the most beautiful manifestations of communal and individual worship of the Divine, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala. This day represents one of the three fundamentals of the Hajj. In fact, our beloved Messenger (May Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Hajj is ‘Arafah” (Tirmidhi).

The significance of this day isn’t restricted to the hujjaj alone! Our beloved Messenger (May Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Fasting the Day of ‘Arafah expiates for two years, one prior and one forthcoming” (Muslim). Furthermore, Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali writes: “Whoever is not able to stand at ‘Arafah, then let him stop at the limits Allah has set. Whoever is not able to spend the night at Muzdalifah, let him spend the night in obedience to Allah which will allow him to become close and attain nearness to Him. Whoever is not able to slaughter at Mina, then let him slaughter his desires therefore he can reach his objective. Whoever is not able to reach the house because it is far, then proceed towards the Lord of the Ka’bah, for He is closer to him than this jugular vein” (Lata’if al-Ma’arif).
