Al-Wakil – The Disposer of Affairs

Description

Transliteration of verse: “Wa kaf? billah wak?l?.”

Translation of verse: “And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of Affairs.” (33:3)

When the world is in constant disarray, and it seems harder by the day to identify friend from foe, this verse is a beautiful reminder of our One and True Guardian–Allah.

As alluded to above, this is the third verse of Surat al-Ahzab. In general, this Surah is in reference to the famous Battle of the Trench when approximately ten thousand men with six hundred horses and many camels united against the Muslims in Madinah—who only numbered three thousand! With only six days to prepare, the Muslims employed a strategy suggested by the Companion, Salman al-Farisi (May Allah be well-pleased with him): dig a trench to prevent the approaching armies from entering with their horses.

The five-and-a-half-kilometre trench was patrolled by the Muslims day and night. It was this genius plan that limited the fighting to rather small skirmishes and continued like this for approximately one month. Throughout this time, many of the parties (ahzab) tried to persuade the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayzah (who lived in Madinah) to allow them to secretly enter. However, the Muslim army came to know of this and their plan was thwarted. Furthermore, dissension between the parties increased as many of them tried to enter into negotiations with the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace). It was in this regard that the above verse affirmed that the Muslims need not make alliances that would compromise the principles of the revelation.

This verse is a reminder that no matter what happens in our lives, it is Allah alone Who is the Disposer of ALL our affairs. Afterall, He is our Mawla (Protector) and “an excellent Protector, an excellent Helper!”
