The Basmalah in Diwani script.

Description

A beginning is the start of a journey to another beginning. It is first a thought, then an intention, then a resolve, then an action. Each completion forms a cycle that moves us to other thoughts, intentions, resolutions and actions. Our lives, then, are multitudes of small beginnings.

For a Muslim, every proper beginning is a step along the straight path, our journey to our eternal home and our ultimate meeting with the Divine. If we were to keep this end in mind, then every action we do would begin in compliance with the teachings of our Prophet (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) OR, with the words of the “Basmalah”:

Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim. In the name of Allah, the Entirely-Merciful, the Especially-Merciful, do we sacralize every act of existence. With His permission, we undertake each task. With His help do we hope to complete and find fulfilment. In Him do we hope for success. Basmalah canvasses would be well-suited in a dining room or eating area of the kitchen, as a reminder to begin eating in the name of Allah; at the entrance to the home as a reminder to enter in His name, or any place in the home as the relevance of this prayer can never be overstated.

In this version of the Basmalah, the interlocking of the end letters with the initial “alif” of the names of Allah, are a stunning rendition of the Diwani style. This script derives its name from “diwan” – the governmental body consisting of the sultan, his cabinet and viziers – and from the use of this script for official and state communication. A distinct feature of this script is that the lower letters are unconventionally interlinked, making writing and reading this script difficult, and thereby also difficult to forge.
